“What’s going to happen to you? All you do is watch TV.” My mother is saying this to a seven-year-old me as I watch the 4:30 Movie on channel 50 for the fifth day in a row in the middle of summer.

“You spend too much time working on the school announcements and not enough time on homework.” My mother is saying this to a 17-year-old me after my best friend and I finish two hours of writing, recording character voices, and mixing in music for a school announcement promoting the Sadie Hawkins dance.

She wasn’t wrong. I was inside on a beautiful day in the former case and my grades did suffer in the latter.   But I wasn’t wasting time. The hours in front of the TV and the hours crafting little stories led directly to a 30-year career in storytelling for television.

Six years at The Sports Network showed me the ropes in television production. Ten years at Discovery Channel refined my story telling skills.  I directed and wrote The Sex Files Season 2 premiere Sex Drive, which became the highest rated Canadian program in the channel’s history and fifth highest rated show of any kind to that point.  The Sex Files Season 2, which I produced, while directing and writing much of it, was the highest rated series on the channel to that point.  The television special Live from Mars: Mars Polar Lander, which I produced, was nominated for a Gemini Award. That’s especially gratifying since the Mars Polar Lander crashed. We did four hours of live TV without one new picture from the red planet and were nominated for the highest award in the country. Good times.

The six years at High Fidelity HDTV as Director of Production were even better. Busier too.  I developed programs, went to international markets, and worked with foreign broadcasters, production companies and distributors. I also developed training seminars for new producers.  The programs I oversaw sold all over the world and won a bunch of awards. My favourite nod was a Canadian Screen Award nomination for best writing on an episode of Cities in Blue, a passion project about the history of the Blues.

Five years at Blue Ant Media, mostly as the Executive Producer for Love Nature’s international launch, gave me the chance to work with a foreign broadcast partner and collaborate with some of the best wildlife producers in the world.

It’s been a blast. I’ve made all kinds of television (documentaries, lifestyle, factual, live) in all kinds of genres (sports, science, nature, arts, history, adventure) with emerging technology (HD, 3D, UltraHD, HDR).

Now I’m storytelling for international productions, advising other storytellers, and coaching people on the methodology of storytelling.

I love the work. The hours I spent in my youth, watching television and making stories, is paying off.
