“What’s going to happen to you? All you do is watch TV.” My mother is saying this to a seven-year-old me as I watch the 4:30 Movie on channel 50 for the fifth day in a row in the middle of summer.
“You spend too much time working on the school announcements and not enough time on homework.” My mother is saying this to a 17-year-old me after my best friend and I finish two hours of writing, recording character voices, and mixing in music for a school announcement promoting the Sadie Hawkins dance.
She wasn’t wrong. But I wasn’t wasting time. The hours in front of the TV and the hours crafting little stories led directly to a 35-year career in storytelling for television.
It’s been a blast. I’ve made all kinds of television (documentaries, lifestyle, factual, live) in all kinds of genres (sports, science, nature, arts, history, adventure) with emerging technology (HD, 3D, UltraHD, HDR).
Now I’m storytelling for international productions, advising other storytellers, writng books, and speaking.
I love the work. The hours I spent in my youth is paying off.
