History in the Making I & II

Producer, Director, Writer

for Boat Rocker Media.

Colbyvision owner Craig Colby series produced History in the Making, a commercial factual series for Boat Rocker media. Craig helped refine the format and story telling, while directing half the series and writing a third of it. He oversaw all aspects of production.

Across the nation and around the world, there are craftsmen who are creating unique items using the same methods from decades, centuries, even millennia in the past. These growing number of experts are producing handcrafted goods which are astonishingly beautiful, tough as nails, and coveted the world over. The process of watching them work is not just fascinating: it also gives us a dynamic, living glimpse back in time to see how some of the most significant items in history were made. In each 30-minute episode, History in the Making vividly presents the process -- using the original techniques -- in the recreation of three items of historical importance. Combining the joy of discovering how things are made with the fascinating historical facts that surround them, this is the show that truly reveals History in the Making. The second series goes further afield to film exceptional craftsmen in North America and Europe.

Craig reviewed artist Cory Trepanier's documentary about his third trip to the arctic to paint the stunning landscape. On Corey's previous film, Into the Arctic 2,  Craig performed the same function, helping Corey deliver a program that was honoured with a Canadian Screen Award nomination.

“With a story that completes a decade of Canadian Arctic exploration, filming and painting, Into the Arctic 3 is more than a career milestone for me. It is an opportunity to share a most inspiring part of our world, at a time when it is undergoing great environmental change. That’s why I asked Craig Colby to join the project as Story Consultant. Craig carefully and expertly helped shape my script, enabling my creative vision.”

CRAIG COLBY’S PAST PRODUCTIONS

Selected Video

Very few of my shows are available online, but here are a few I’ve worked on in a variety of roles.

The Sex Files

I produced seasons 2 and 3 of this award-winning, internationally selling, ratings busting series. Season 1 was the highest rated series in the history of the channel and our team increased the numbers by 30% in season 2. The season premiere of season 2 was the highest rated Canadian show in the history of the channel and the fifth highest rated program of any kind. I directed and wrote this episode, which still has a lot of useful advice.

Canada 1812: Forged in Fire

This six part series was made in co-operation with Parks Canada and Heritage Canada for the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. We featured 6 prominent figures from the Canadian side. It was shot in 3D, which limited our shot selection, and had a companion graphic novel, which contributed to the artistic recreations in the show. I conceived of and developed this show, as well as executive produced it and did some of the writing.

Cosmic Vistas

I co-created and executive produced this look at our universe. It drove the ratings at Oasis, Love Nature and the Smithsonian Channel in Canada. It also sold well internationally.

A Park for All Seasons

I executive produced this series on the Canadian parks system, one of the true natural jewels in the world. I only got to go on one shoot, but it was a beauty, a 3D shoot to Gwaii Haanas National Park in British Columbia. We loaded and unloaded a ton and a half of gear off a boat every day and hauled it through a huge tidal swing. I’m very proud of this beautiful series. Unfortunately, this is just a teaser and not the full show.

Collector Showdown

This was the first show we created at High Fidelity HDTV. I was the executive producer and came up with the concept. We made 26 episodes in 9 months on a limited budget. The first episode was a lot of fun and a landmark day in the lives of both contestants.
